Trans Book Club

Monday, September 9

6:00-8:00pm

Perpetual Transition is our core transgender supportive social group. This group, like all groups at OUTMemphis, is peer-led and identity-based. Perpetual Transition has been meeting at OUTMemphis since 2005, and is open to anyone who identifies as transgender or is questioning their gender. This group meets every Monday night from 6:00p-8:00p.

With the exception of September 2019 because of Labor Day, this group will be conducting a book club on the first Monday of each month. During the group’s first normal meeting time of each month, they will discuss a book by a transgender, non-binary,  or gender-non-conforming author, or one that discusses these themes in a meaningful way. They will also pick the book to be read at the next such meeting. There are so many trans authors that fail to gain recognition, and this is an effort to pay them homage.

The first book the group will be reading is Luna by Julie Anne Peters. From this website:

A groundbreaking novel about a transgender teen, selected as a National Book Award Finalist!

Regan’s brother Liam can’t stand the person he is during the day. Like the moon from whom Liam has chosen his female name, his true self, Luna, only reveals herself at night. In the secrecy of his basement bedroom Liam transforms himself into the beautiful girl he longs to be, with help from his sister’s clothes and makeup. Now, everything is about to change: Luna is preparing to emerge from her cocoon. But are Liam’s family and friends ready to welcome Luna into their lives?

Compelling and provocative, this is an unforgettable novel about a transgender teen’s struggle for self-identity and acceptance.”

If you identify as transgender or are questioning and are interested in this project, we urge you to read Luna and join us for Perpetual Transition on Monday, September 9th at 6:00pm. Please note, moving forward, the group will be meeting on the first Monday of each month.
