Building Health Awareness Together: OUTMemphis & Rhodes College

On August 12, 2026, OUTMemphis joined resident advisors at Rhodes College for a conversation about sexual health, HIV prevention, and the resources available to students and the broader Memphis community.

Invited by Dr. Alex Glenn, Residence Life Coordinator in the Department of Residence Life, the session introduced this year’s resident advisors to OUTMemphis and our work in the Mid-South. We shared a brief history of the organization and highlighted the services currently available across our locations, including community health, mental health, and supportive services.

A major focus of the conversation was sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with particular attention to HIV. Resident advisors learned about the history of HIV in the United States, advances in prevention and care, and why routine screening continues to be an important part of taking care of your health.

As student leaders, resident advisors are often an important connection point for their peers. Increasing their awareness of HIV, STIs, and local resources helps ensure that students know where to turn when they have questions or need services.

OUTMemphis offers free HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and syphilis testing. Anyone interested in getting tested can schedule an appointment at one of our locations by visiting the Your Health section of the OUTMemphis website.

We appreciate Rhodes College and Dr. Glenn for inviting OUTMemphis to be part of this year’s resident advisor programming and for helping us build stronger connections between campus and community health resources.
