OUTMemphis Condemns SCOTUS Ruling on Trans Athletes

Enforcement will require invasive questions and physical inspections

MEMPHIS — Molly Quinn, CEO of OUTMemphis, released the following statement on the June 30 U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing states to ban trans students from playing sports:

“The ruling upholds a Tennessee ban already in place, and fortunately, the court did not establish a national ban or set a broad precedent restricting the freedom of all transgender people in our schools, workplaces and communities.

This case is built on a false narrative: that trans student athletes want to ‘cheat’ the system and take opportunities away from other girls. But in reality, enforcing bans could affect any female athlete. Enforcement will require invasive questions about menstrual cycles and physical inspection. States with bans will violate girls—not protect them.

Finally, we want to assure the trans youth we serve in the Mid-South that they have a future. The permanent home we’re building in Midtown will outlast the moment of backlash we’re living through, and we won’t stop fighting for you.”
